Lolita W. Melhado, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, ACHPN, FPCN, is a distinguished author, researcher, and transformative leader in palliative care with over three decades of nursing excellence. She earned her PhD in Nursing from the University of Central Florida, focusing on palliative care and health policy—a foundation that has shaped her visionary approach to compassionate, patient-centered care. Throughout her career, Dr. Melhado has been instrumental in expanding access to quality palliative services by implementing consultation programs across multiple healthcare systems and developing comprehensive education initiatives that have elevated standards of practice. Her scholarly contributions include publications in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, as well as significant work on the core curriculum for hospice and palliative advanced practice nurses. Dr. Melhado’s leadership extends to both national and state levels. She serves as the 2026 Chair of the National Coalition of Hospice and Palliative Care Quality and Equity Committee, Co-Chair of the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network Palliative Care State of the Science Committee, and Co-Chair of the Care Beyond Cure Primary Palliative Care Workgroup. Previously, she served as Co-Chair of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Taskforce, championing healthcare equity initiatives. Her exceptional contributions have been recognized with the 2017 HPNA Distinguished Nursing Practice Award and the 2025 Fellow in Palliative Care Nursing designation. As Vice President of Clinical Programs at OneAccord Health in Fort Myers, Florida, Dr. Melhado continues to advance her mission of ensuring equitable access to high-quality palliative and end-of-life care while nurturing the next generation of healthcare providers.
